In this book, I highlight a number of artists who did not compromise during the years of the dictatorship, and because of this they made great sacrifices. Together with Ágnes Nagy Nemes, we can confess that „no authentic art is possible without an authentic life.”
The famous personalities of a generation of writers and poets – especially the new moons – did not have children. Instead of descendants, they gave works to eternity. They were young, yet remained childless, because that would have made them vulnerable to the system.
It is typical of the people featured in the volume that they created works for children in the decisive creative phase of their lives. (They were not allowed to write for adult readers for a while…)
Because of this, in a transformed literary space, in another field within it, they were still able to preserve their independence, their creation of aesthetic value, and inscribed their names both in youth literature and in the hearts of children.
The book was first published in The Hague, published by Mikes International, in 2007 was published under the title “But where are the children?” – „Children’s literature and childless writers”. This literary historical and sociological work examines the problem of childless writers.
Alaine Polcz drew my attention to the phenomenon contained in the book in the form of conversations. Balázs Lengyel and Magda Szabó also provided significant help to the work.
